His real name was Fath Ali and was named after a sufi saint, Tipu Mastan Auliya. Even a tomb was created named as 'Tipu Mastan Aulia Tomb' whose construction started in 1777 and was completed in 1783.
He was first among the Indian rulers who understood the importance of economic strength for the maintenance of the army.
He even attempted to introduce modern industries in India by importing foreign workers and exports but failed due to the Mughal pressure. But he was able to maintain to good relations with the other foreign powers, mostly the French.
He sent emissionaries to turkey Iran Myanmar to develop foreign trade and tried to establish a trading company just like the East India Company.
He had a superior army compared with the Indian rulers armed with muskets and bayonets in European fashion and his army was the most loyal of all the Indian rulers till the last breath.
