I don't think the ferrocerium spontaneously exploded. I think the spawing of the concrete set it off. I guess in the end the result is the same, an expected explosion uncomfortably near you.

It wasn't the flint that exploded. The concrete air pockets blew (spalled) out the chunk of concrete which imparted force on the metal and caused the spontaneous sparking
I don’t think it does spontaneously combust I believe that was just caused by the concrete popping under the extreme heat.
