Lionel Messi's Comments On Being Compared To Cristiano Ronaldo Is What Makes Him Better Than CR7

Whether it's football, cricket or any other game, the rivalry amongst athletes is one of the prime reason why sports continue to enjoy a huge fanbase across the globe. From Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in tennis to Sachin Tendulkar and Glenn McGrath in cricket, it's individual rivalries across sports that often bring out the best in players. And, the world of football is no different either.

Football, one of the biggest sport on the planet, has witnessed numerous rivalries across different eras. But, in the last decade, the highly-followed game has been dominated by two menacing individual forces, the world has come to know as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

There has been no shortage of exciting talents or individual heroics, but it seems that no other footballer is even close to the ever-improving standards Ronaldo and Messi have set in their era. If the Portuguese smashes the record of goals in a season, his Argentine compatriot comes up with a better response next year. If Leo scores a hat-trick, CR7 comes up with something special of his own. Even in the fight for Ballon d'Or award, the duo are neck-to-neck with a record-tying five wins apiece.

While Messi's control with the ball is second to none, Ronaldo's physical presence has proved to be menacing for the opposition defenders. Both the footballers have been equally brilliant in their own capacity, so how do you ascertain who's better among the two? It's a question that has the world of football divided with their respective fans often seen waging wars on the social media.

But, those who've followed the careers of Ronaldo and Messi would agree that it's probably the humility that seperates the two footballing superstars. From their respective goal celebrations to comments on being the best, while Ronaldo - despite all his charity work and support to fans - seems flamboyant, Messi appears more grounded and humble - something that was once again highlighted recently.

I'm the best player in history, in the good moments and the bad ones. I respect everyone's preferences, but I've never seen anyone better than me," Ronaldo had said after winning his fifth Ballon d'Or in December 2017. Though Ronaldo has a pretty clear answer to the big 'GOAT' debate, it seems that Messi has a slightly different response to that question.

In a recent with Tyc Sports he was asked the question and his response sums up the difference between the two men. "I'm not interested in being the best in history. I have never suggested that: not being the first, nor the second, third or fourth. Every time I start a season I try to improve myself, win everything, leave everything every time I go out to the pitch, give the maximum for my teammates and for myself," Messi said.

While there is nothing wrong in claiming you're the best and we are not saying Ronaldo is wrong to feel or say so, but being the greatest of all time isn't just restricted to scoring goals and smashing records, it's also about the attitude of a player away from the playing field - something Messi continues to highlight every now and then.
