After being presented to 50,000 supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday night Eden Hazard declared: I've come to be the best player in the world.

The 28-year-old, who had drawn a crowd for his presentation bigger than three of Real Madrid's league games last season, said of his signing: 'Everything began last year after the World Cup but I continued one year more (at Chelsea) and I think that worked out well both on a personal level and for the club because we won the Europa League.

'I never doubted that I would end up playing for Real Madrid. I will try to be become the best player in the world. But before that I will try to make Madrid the best team in the world.'

There are contesting versions of Hazard's price tag. Madrid have briefed that he has cost €100m with €30m in add-ons to follow.

Elsewhere a price of £150m has been suggested. Either way he will end up being Real Madrid's most expensive signing but he was keen to play that status down: 'No I'm not a Galactico, not yet. I can still improve,' he said.

He was presented without a shirt number and joked: 'I've been lucky because I have been able to talk to Luka Modric through Mateo Kovacic and I asked him if could lend me the No 10 shirt and he said no.'

That raised a laugh and a relaxed Hazard grinned through his first press conference, charming Madrid reporters as he had the supporters who half filled the Bernabeu and created a more impressive atmosphere than for some of last season's games.

Hazard revealed he knew he would join Madrid after missing out on the move last summer

The crowd also chanted for the club to sign Kylian Mbappe but when asked if the club should sign Paul Pogba and the PSG forward this summer he said: 'I want to play with the best and those mentioned are the best but it's not for me to say about transfers.'

The signing brought to an end a long courtship between Hazard and Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane. 'I used to play with my brothers in the garden in a Madrid shirt,' he said.

'Zidane was my hero since I was a kid. Him being here was an important factor but I already wanted to play here.'

Hazard also joked that Luka Modric would not give up the No 10 shirt for his new team-mate

He was surprisingly frank about where he wanted to play: 'I like playing on the left or as a No 10,' he said. 'When you play for Real Madrid there is not one single star, the team is the star. I'm the new guy of the team.'

He has been brought to Real Madrid for his goals but admitted that he is unlikely to continue with penalty taking responsibilities that were his from his Chelsea days. 'The captain of the team is very good at it,' he joked in reference to Sergio Ramos. 'But if he asks me – I don't think he will – then I will but I don't think so.'

He was asked if the long wait to sign for the club meant he was arriving already past his best. 'No I don't think it's too late,' he said. 'I'm 28 years-old. I am at the best moment of my career. The dream to play for this club has been there for a long time. I thought it was time for a change. I have come to the best club in the world.'
