Bengaluru: Now, carry around your own personal liquor stock or get it delivered across the city. Sounds interesting? Call it alcohol in the cloud; this startup is going after the USD 35-billion liquor industry in India.

HipBar, the brainchild of Prasanna Natarajan and Prashant Adurty, are two individuals who understand the retail industry and the gaps in the trade. This is one of the most innovative business models, who are working around the regulations that bar the sale of alcohol on digital channels to build a business.

With a stringent age verification process and compliance procedures, HipBar is delivering liquor in Bengaluru. With a minimum order of Rs 500, you can order your favourite brand of liquor at any residential place and not public locations.

HipBar services can only be availed by individuals who are above the legal drinking age, which is 21years. However, Aadhaar remains the default ID used for biometric authentication of age.

The app is available both in iOS and Android version.

So, how HipBar promotes responsible drinking via home delivery:

HipBar ensures that no delivery occurs without the evidence of a valid, government-authorised ID proof.

After placing the order, the details are routed to the nearest retail partner. Once confirmed, a delivery agent will pick up your order from the store and deliver it to your residential address within 2-3 hours.

A HipBar customer is required to furnish an original of any of the following IDs to the agent – Aadhaar, driving license, PAN card, Passport, and Voter ID card

Once the ID proof is furnished, the delivery agent will check the same. If the proof of identity handed over is the Aadhar Card, the customer will verify the customer’s thumb impression on the delivery agent’s device and confirm the identity.

For other documents, the delivery agent verifies the last 4 digits of the unique document number on his device before handing over the product.

However, delivery only is made at residential locations within shop timings (2PM - 10PM).

However, to avail home delivery services, you must stay within 3 kilometres of any HipBar affiliated retail store. The app will detect your location and accept your order only if this condition is met.

What exactly is ‘HipBar’ app?

HipBar is basically a Reserve Bank of India-certified mobile wallet that solely covers a network of establishments that sell or serve alcohol.

However, unlike other wallets, it also acts as a discovery platform, where consumers can load money on to HipBar wallet, check out the catalogue of products on offer, and pay accordingly.

The venture has also tied up with a mix of restaurant chains and standalone establishments, including Social and Sotally Tober. It is also working with liquor brands. It has a tie-up with almost 100 stores and 80 bars in Bengaluru, as per a report in the Economic Times.

The company has also invested Rs 7 crore to build the business. HipBar customers get a discounted rate and will not pay a premium like other customers.

But, remember, HipBar will not offer any discounts. It will offer suggestions to its partners, based on its analytics.

Earlier, there were media reports that that startup was also offering liquor connoisseurs to buy full bottles of their favourite liquor and later redeem it in any restaurant or hotel across the country.

For example, if you buy any liquor, say Vodka for Rs 3000, you can consume even a small portion (maybe 30 ml or 60 ml) in any bar of your choice.

The restaurant or bar will then charge the customer for the portion, which will be paid through the app.

As soon as you do the payment, the app will reflect a reduction in the volume of the bottle. The bottle of whisky that was purchased will stand as a prepaid instrument.

“We are a fintech company and also a platform for liquor companies to promote their brands on,” Prasanna, founder of HipBar told YOURSTORY.
