Frank Warren said Billy Joe Saunders had to move to the super middleweight ranks because nobody wanted to face him in the ring.

The promoter added that Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin were among the most high-profile names to turn down the opportunity, and believes Saunders' dominant win over David Lemieux was enough to put off some of the better fighters at 60.

Saunders makes his 168-pound debut on May 18 when he goes up against Shefat Isufi at Stevenage football ground to fight for the vacant WBO title.

Warren said: “It’s for the world title, it’s for the full title. He’ll have options. He can fight at super-middleweight or middleweight, that’s going to be his choice depending on who’s around."

He added that the proposed fight against Golovkin was very nearly signed, sealed and delivered, but that in the end the Kazakhstani 37-year-old thought better of it.

“The problem I have is there’s two fighters in particular, Golovkin, they sent us contracts and we signed and sent them back on two occasions. I don’t think they want it and I know that Canelo don’t want it. And that’s the problem,” Warren said.

“So we’ve got to look to make another meaningful fight for him, which we will do. In the meantime the Billy Joe Saunders that fought [David] Lemieux has been out the ring for quite a while now. He’s moving up a weight. He’s still a young man. The Billy Joe that fought Lemieux has got the beating of those two fellas [Canelo and Danny Jacobs] I saw at the weekend.”

Saunders was also due to fight the American Demetrius Andrade last year but it had to be scrapped when Saunders tested positive for a banned substance in the USA, although it is considered legal for use in out of completion circumstances
