On Thursday, a group of students at Jadavpur University showed black flags to Union Minister and Singer Babul Supriyo and surrounded and blocking him from leaving the campus. After the incident, Governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankhar reached the University with a large number of policemen. Students of leftist student organizations- SFI, AFSU, FETSU and AISA, and TMCP also demonstrated in front of the university's Chancellor Governor.
The students blocked their path and hit the bonnet of their vehicle. The security guards kept on requesting the present students to withdraw. At the same time, Governor Dhankar was seen helping the Union Minister. A spokesperson of the Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA) said that the teachers came forward to convince the students after that Dhankhar and Babul Supriyo left the University in the evening.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's supporters, who held the event on campus, vandalized horribly the rooms of the Art Faculty Students Union (AFSU). The supporters of AVBP were seen setting fire to the room furniture, fans, and laptops with louder slogans of 'Jai Shri Ram and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai. They also painted ABVP symbols on the walls. They set fire to the tire outside gate number four of the university.
University sources said that the governor came out of the number three gate in his vehicle. Union Minister Babul Supriyo came to the university at 2.30 pm to address a seminar organized by ABVP. The students initially prevented Supriyo from entering the campus for about one and a half hours by shouting the slogan 'Babul Supriyo Go Back'.
Supriyo said that the Trinamool government in the state would be responsible for any incident. Supriyo attended the event amidst heavy security, he told to the media persons that, 'I have not come here to do politics. I am saddened by the SFI students behaviors of the university, the way they surrounded me. They harassed me, pulled my hair and forcefully pushed me'.
While leaving the premises at five in the evening, the BJP leader also faced protests. Governor Dhankar said that siege of Union Minister Babul Supriyo by a group of students in the university is a serious issue. Supriyo asked the Chief Secretary of the state to take necessary action in the connection with the terrible event.
According to university sources, the chancellor of the university, Suranjan Das, deteriorated during the protest and was rushed to the hospital. Kailash Vijayvargiya, BJP national general secretary and in-charge of the party's West Bengal affairs, said the incident was enough evidence of deteriorating law and order in the state.
