I’m gonna tell you a grandma way of increasing your vocabulary with a little twist that I follow. And, trust me this will go a long long way. By this, I mean you won’t forget the words and their meaning. You will know how to pronounce and how to use those words in a sentence.

This method is simple and effective if you are a beginner like me.

Firstly, let me tell you I’m not a native English speaker. English is my 3rd language after Hindi and Kumaoni.

Habits that you must follow:

(1) Make a diary where you can write down the words.

Mine is a very small spiral diary that is easy to handle and I can carry it anywhere.

(2) Read books, newspaper articles, magazines, anything that intrigues you.

Remember always to start with simple and small (this method applies to everything in life :-)

(3) Underline the words that you’re not able to understand. Keep reading and come back to those words later.

Start with writing 1–2 words a day, that you obviously have to increase with time. After 6 months now, I write 5–6 words per day.

(4) Search the meaning of the words but don’t write words and their meaning. Instead, write the sentence from where you picked that word and underline that word.

Every time, you will read that sentence you’ll understand the meaning and above everything, you will know how to use that word in the form of a sentence. Because just knowing the meaning of the word is not our motive, right?

(5) Write the pronunciation of the word in your native language if you find it difficult to pronounce them.

Sometimes, I even write the meaning of some words in Hindi so that I can comprehend them better.

(6) Revise a few words after some days. Pronounce them. Make your own sentences with them in your mind.

For example, I revise the words and their meaning of the whole week at the weekend (takes 5–10 minutes). And at the end of the month, I go through all the words I have worked with in that whole month (can take 20–30 minutes).

Sometimes, when I feel like I go through my whole diary which is optional because if you are a voracious reader you will somehow come across those words every now and then.

(7) Never skip a day.

I actually skipped this habit for 13 days and promised myself not to do the same ever again. :D.

After a time you’ll use those words while speaking even without thinking.

I’m doing this since January this year and I find this really helpful and effective. I have tried other methods of increasing my vocabulary but all futile. Right now I write 5–6 words per day and revise them during my leisure time.
